Our Mayoral Handbook specifies that for a man the accepted formal style of address is:
“His Worship the Town Mayor of Dunstable, Councillor X”
For a woman:
“The Worshipful, The Town Mayor of Dunstable, Councillor Y”
Our councillors are looking for something more equal or generic. Has anyone made any changes to the forms of address? Perhaps to use Her Worship as appropriate, or to always use The Worshipful?
With thanks for any suggestions
Paul
You could consider the following options:
- Their Worship the Town Mayor of Dunstable, Councilor X
- The Worshipful the Town Mayor of Dunstable, Councilor X
Both options are gender-neutral and maintain the formality of the title. “Their Worship” is a direct replacement for “His Worship” and “Her Worship,” while “The Worshipful” is already a gender-neutral term that can be used consistently in my view, I only use Their Worship these days as habit.
Does this help?

we always use The Worshipful… and have done ever since I have worked in the local authority (almost 20 years).
Thank you Michelle, we are obviously behind the times!
