Ref Remembrance protocol & Sgt of the Mace

Should the sergeant of the mace attend the remembrance service with the Mayor?

We have a Remembrance Parade at our Main war memorial and a university-arranged church Service that runs simultaneously. As Sgt of the Mace, and an Armed Forces Veteran, I feel I should accompany the Mayor to whichever event they attend. However, it seems that somewhere along the line, the role is to lead a procession to the church, and not necessarily attend with the Mayor.

I have challenged this logic recently and wonder if there is a definitive answer, or is it simply up to the ā€˜Civic team’ to set their own procedure?

Any advice or ā€˜procedural regulations’ would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Carl

Colleagues in the Guild of Macebearers are your go to for a definitive response, but in my view (with 41 years experience) is that the Mace precedes the Mayor and should not be elsewhere at a different event.
