VE and VJ day commemoration

We are commemorating VE Day 80 with a couple of community events - including a beacon on 08.05.25 following Bruno Peek’s template.
I have been asked about commemorating VJ day. Are any councils marking it and if so, how?

It is as important to mark VJ80 as VE80. In 1945 those fighting in the Far East were known as the forgotten army as Europe celebrated. It is important that we don’t repeat that 80 years on. On both occasions it is commemoration of service and sacrifice that we need to focus on.

BBC has just started its run up to VE80 with news items - it is unlikely we will see much about VJ until that is done, so June seems likely. You can and should start planning before that though and your VE commemorations can be modified rather than do something completely different.

For VJ80 your council may want to develop a response to questions about nuclear weapons, as it is also the 80th anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs.
