Who takes precedence please?

Good afternoon. Our Mayor has been invited to an engagement he can’t attend but has requested the Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayoress attend in his place. He has since advised that he would like the Mayoress to attend also. So, the question, Mayoress or Deputy Mayor - who takes precedence please? Thank you.

Hi. An elected official always takes precedence over an unelected one. So the Deputy Mayor would come above the Mayoress, unless she holds her own position which is above the Deputy Mayor. I believe the Mayoress would position above the Deputy Mayoeress, but that’s up for discussion

The Deputy Mayor. The Mayoress is only a mayoress when she is with the Mayor.

Hello - I agree with the other two responses. However, I would also question how the Mayoress can attend without the Mayor being present…

Thanks all. That is really helpful and makes perfect sense. Yes I did wonder about the Mayoress attending without the Mayor, but (apparently - although I’m not aware and would be really interested in this) Mayoress’ ‘in other authorities’ (this is a quote from my current Mayor) do on occasions attend events on their own?? I’ll be honest, other than a neighbouring authority that holds a ‘Mayoress at home’ event, I wasn’t aware of this so would be really interested in any authorities that do this - not that it’s particularly something I want to start!!

Hi
Although I don’t have it to hand, I am sure that Civic Ceremonial advises on this issue, saying that the Mayoress should RARELY act independently of the Mayor. Hope that helps.

It is not an avenue that we would go down at all

The Mayoress would not attend an engagement on her own here in Lincoln.
